How to Apply

Eligibility

At this time, eligibility for the educational savings account is income based with the exception of students qualifying with special needs. Please read below to see if your family is eligible to apply for the ESA.

Basic minimum qualifications are as follows:


  • Student must be between 5-19 years old (or up to age 21 if they qualify for services under the Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1975 or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973).


  • Student cannot currently receive a scholarships through the Alabama Accountability Act.


  • Annual Gross Income (AGI) must be at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Line for year end of 2024 to qualify. Please refer to the chart to see if you meet the income threshold.

Required Documentation

The following documents must be submitted when completing the application. If the following documents are not added at the time of application submission, your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed until after all completed applications have been processed.


Required Documentation for Students:

  • Birth certificate (for students entering kindergarten or 12th grade)
  • 3rd quarter report card


Required Documentation for Parents/Guardians:

  • 2025 State income tax return (AL Form 40 or 1040)
  • State Driver's License or Identification Card
  • Current Utility Bill


Families applying under special needs or active military dependents may need to submit additional documentation as seen below:

  • Current IEP, 504 plan, or medical diagnosis of special needs or disability
  • Active duty orders and most recent LES



Awarding Process


The basic eligibility requirements are listed above. The following information is related to the awarding process.

In accordance with the CHOOSE Act, all ESA applications will be awarded in the following order:

Students with Special Needs

The first 500 ESA scholarships are reserved for students with special needs who have an IEP or 504.

Dependents of Active Duty Military

The next students approved are dependents of active duty service members who are zoned for a priority school.

Low-income Students

The next students approved are students who meet the income eligibility with a household AGI of 300% below the Federal Poverty Line.
